Chuckey-Doak foils Buccaneers for 1-A soccer crown

University High watched as Chuckey-Doak scored three unanswered goals for a 3-2 win in the District 1-A boys soccer championship on Thursday.

With the outcome, University High (14-4-0) will have to travel for Tuesday’s Region 1-A semifinal contest at Gatlinburg-Pittman. Chuckey-Doak (8-7) has Berean-Christian on the slate in Afton.

“Give them credit, they are a good team,” Bracken Burns said about Chuckey-Doak. “They worked hard and capitalized on their opportunities. We had some opportunities that we left on the field. I can’t take anything away from the way they played. We’re disappointed to finish second instead of first, but we’re still alive.”

The Bucs struck in the opening moments to take the lead, with Malachi Heath accounting for the ice-breaking goal. The 25th minute resulted in Walker Page sending a rebound to the back of the net after a Black Knights save.

Braden Binaghi got the scoring started for the Black Knights when he sent a ball into the box. The ball took a hop over the Bucs’ keeper and found the back of the net. That came in the 38th minute.

Binaghi struck again in the 62nd minute when he stole the ball at the top of his own box. From there, he went the distance down the sideline and sent the ball into the far corner of the goal.

The eventual game-winning score was booted home by Brendan Shipley a minute later.

University High had a couple scoring chances, one shortly after the visitors took the lead. Pate Anglin had a shot barely saved by Justin Gregg that led to a corner kick. The 75th minute saw Moses Rathbun find the ball in front of the net, but the packed-in defense prevented the goal.

The Bucs took both regular season meetings against Chuckey-Doak this season, but Thursday did not go University High’s way. It marked the second straight season Chuckey-Doak beat the Bucs in the District 1-A title tilt.
