Behind two send-half goals from Taylor Cross, Bearden beat the Lady Hilltoppers 3-0.
Science Hill had 12 shots total in the match, with seven of them on goal — but did not get the fortuitous bounces it needed to cut into the lead late.
“We had multiple chances in front of the goal in the second half, but the bounces didn’t go our way,” Science Hill head coach David Strickland said. “We move on and everything is good. I’m not disappointed with the effort. We had a lot of girls play great. We’ll get to get healthy and regroup for Saturday.”
Science Hill had most of its opportunities in the first half and had the best one with good crosses off the foot of Savannah Fields and Paige Carlsen.
However, the physical Bearden defense was playing Science Hill tight. That frustrated the Lady Hilltoppers at times and was not the style of play that fits them.
The Lady Bulldogs were in the passing lanes constantly, but there were some good crosses into the box in the first half.
In the second half, Bearden stormed out of the gate with Cross’s first goal — off an Alex Smith assist — in the 41st minute.
The game seemed to settle into a rhythm midway through the second half, but Bearden broke it open with goals in the 61st and 62nd minutes.
The first was off a rebounded shot by Smith when it hit off Science Hill goalkeeper Haley Elrod. It was right place, right time as Abby Brewer knocked it into the back of the net for the second goal.
The goal that was the back-breaker for the Lady ’Toppers was when Cross looped in her second goal over Luna’s head into the upper right corner on a beautiful shot that might have been intended as a cross.
Science Hill will travel Saturday in the sectional matchup to play Maryville.
The winner will move on to the state championship next week in Murfreesboro.
The scheduled start time is at 7 p.m.
