The Lady Hilltoppers, who defeated Knox Powell in the sectional round last year to earn a trip to the state tournament, won the rematch with a 3-0 decision at Tipton Stadium on Tuesday night.
It was the season opener for Powell while Science Hill improved to 2-0 after having beaten Daniel Boone by a score of 7-1 on Monday.
Science Hill junior Paige Carlsen said the Lady Hilltoppers took this game seriously.
“We were ready to play them,” said Carlsen. “We are trying to get to the state, so we want to keep winning all of these games. This was one on the bucket list, so it was pretty good. I’m very proud of all the girls.”
After a scoreless first half, Science Hill broke through in the opening minutes of the second half. Freshman Sophia Youngman found the net to break the ice.
Head coach David Strickland said his team did a good job in the first half, except for one area.
“We did a very good job of keeping the ball and dictating the flow of the game and the pace of the game,” he said. “We talked (at halftime) about improving the quality in the final third. And we started getting our breaks and breaking their lines of defending and playing in between players.”
Powell was still within striking distance and had a chance or two to get things even. But Carlsen ended a lot of the suspense with a goal in the 72nd minute.
“The midfielder, Julia Luna, got it over the top and I ran on and had a tap in for the goal,” said Carlsen.
With four minutes left in the contest, Ariana Gallegos Rodriguez made the victory more emphatic with a nice shot into the upper left corner of the net.
Leading the way for Hilltoppers in the win over Boone were Sydney Jordan and Sophia Youngman, who each had two goals.
Also scoring were Savannah Fields, Lina Powell and Teagan Kersey.
