Trump takes nearly every vote in Carter primary

ELIZABETHTON — Carter County Republicans were very good to Donald Trump on Tuesday night and Carter County Democrats narrowly chose Joe Biden over Bernie Sanders.

Trump took nearly every Republican vote, receiving 4,468 votes for 97.41 percent of the total. Joe Walsh managed only 40 votes and Bill Weld had 23.

In the Democratic primary, Biden received 823 votes for 35.63 percent, while Sanders received 768 votes for 33.16 percent. Michael Bloomberg was third with 344 votes and Elizabeth Warren was fourth with 219 votes. Following the top four, Pete Buttigieg received 72 votes, Amy Klobuchar had 36,Tulsi Gabbard had 13, Tom Steyer had 9, John Delaney received 7, Andrew Yang had 5, Michael Bennett had 4, and Cory Booker, Julian Castro and Deval Patrick each received one vote apiece. Marianne Williamson failed to receive a vote.

In the only contested race in the Carter County Republican primary, Carter County Commissioner Mark Tester won the nomination to run for the seat to which he was appointed after the death of Ronnie Trivet last year. Tester received 389 votes to defeat his Republican challengers. Rocky Croy came in second with 203 votes and Juanita McKinney received 106 votes.

In one other County Commission race, in the 8th District, Thomas Proffitt received 304 complementary votes. Proffitt is running to replace Commissioner Rick Richardson, who died in office last year.

In the only countywide race in the primary, incumbent Assessor of Property Ronnie Taylor received 4,128 complimentary votes. He faces no opposition in the August general election.
