ELIZABETHTON — Local state legislators commemorated the recent induction of David Holtsclaw into the East Tennessee State University Athletics Hall of Fame with a Tennessee State Proclamation praising the man called “The Hampton Hammer.”

The proclamation also praises his four years of military service in the United States Marine Corps.

Senator Rusty Crowe and Rep. John Holsclaw presented a framed copy off the proclamation to at Post 2166 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars last week. Deacon Bowers, a member of a national hall of fame for boxing, and Junior Stanley joined the group in honoring Holtsclaw.

The proclamation notes that Holtsclaw was a Little All American in 1964. He was also named All Ohio Valley Conference for three years and helped the Bucs win a share of the Oho Valley Conference championship in 1962.

He was also a standout at Hampton High School, where he became the high school’s first 1,000-yard rusher. He also rushed for 303 yards in a game against Jonesboro.

Following his college career, Holtsclaw went into coaching.

The proclamation is signed by state Sen. Speaker Randy McNally and Crowe.
