Ten McDonald’s, two weeks and a lot of help from the community netted $13,000 for two area animal shelters.

Nine McDonalds restaurants in Washington County and one in Unicoi County participated in a two-week campaign earlier this month to help raise money for the Washington County-Johnson City and Unicoi County animal shelters. For two weeks, cashiers at those 10 McDonalds locations asked customers if they wanted to donate $1 to local shelters.

Nine restaurants chipped in for Washington County to net more than $11,000 in contributions, and the McDonald’s in Unicoi County raised almost $2,000 for its shelter.

“We want to thank the community because they are the ones that really came out and stepped up,” Washington County-Johnson City shelter Development Director Cara Ledbetter said.

The Washington County-Johnson City shelter partnered with McDonald’s earlier this year for a sort of test run — which raised $5,000 in just a few hours. Ledbetter said this will probably be an annual fundraiser for the shelter to help with immediate needs.

Kevin King, director for the Unicoi County Animal Shelter, said a McDonald’s employees came and adopted two dogs during the campaign. He said the $2,000 in donations will likely pay for emergency medical care for some of the shelter’s animals.

“Any extra funding we get, we use to treat animals,” King said.
