She attended Princeton Elementary and graduated from Boones Creek High School. She lettered three years in basketball as a right guard. In her senior year, she was given the D.A.R. award in citizenship and selected queen from her senior class for Spring Fest. She married her high school sweetheart Wallace Sanders on July 25, 1946. They were married 68 years.
Mary has been active at the Harrison Christian Church and has the honor of being the member who has been there the longest, 89 years. Five generations of her family have attended the Harrison Christian Church. She served her Savior by teaching in the Sunday School. She taught nursery, primary, third grade, junior high age girls, and the Ladies class. She was charter member of “The Friendship Circle” and at her death, she was an active member of Robert Curry’s class and the Thursday morning Bible study.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband; Wallace Farrell Sanders, her parents; Joseph Niles and Florence (Flossie) Pearl Hartsell Crouch, two brothers; Joseph Niles and Hartsell Earl Crouch, two sister-in-law’s; Rosemary Ballard Crouch and Mary Potter Crouch Derting, and a daughter-in-law; Nancy Ann Tucker Sanders.
Mary is survived by her children; Rebecca Sue Samborsky (Peter Eugene) of Cincinnati, OH, David Wallace Sanders (Debbie) of Johnson City, TN, Nancy Ella Greene (Bruce) of Cookeville, TN, eight grandchildren; Amy Elizabeth Zimmerer (Greg) of Louisville, KY, Peter Eugene Samborsky II of Centerville, OH, Penny Sue Ferguson (Brady) of Cincinnati, OH, Tiffany Anna Musser (Alex) of Louisville, KY, Joseph “Joey” Wallace Sanders (Laura) of Johnson City, TN, Matthew Allen Sanders of Johnson City, TN, Mary Elizabeth Hazare (Meghraj) of Chattanooga, TN, and Andrew Kyle Greene (Katy) of Silver Spring, MD, two extended family grandchildren; Jamie Singer and Aaron McGee (Amanda), fifteen great grandchildren; Zachary Martin, Hayden Wallace, and Harrison Eugene Zimmerer; Nolan Peter, Parker Edward and Hudson Andrew Samborsky, Wyatt William, Mitchell Eugene and Molly Elizabeth Ferguson; Brooke Ann, Jackson Wallace, Valerie Claire, and Allison Lee Ann Elizabeth Sanders; Henry Niles Hazare, and Alexander Blair Musser II, five extended great grandchildren; Caroline, Ellie, and Max Singer, Brooklyn Payne, Jeremiah Bartlett, and a very special friend, care giver and honorary granddaughter Rita Johnson (Ronnie).
Mary was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was a stay at home mom, her family and church came first. She loved sports, following the basketball teams at E.T.S.U., the Lady Vols, and the Atlanta Braves. She enjoyed walking the trails of Hunter’s Lake and tending her beautiful flower garden and porch plants. She was known for her homemade bread that she made often for her family, friends, church, and those in need.
The Sanders family will gather to greet friends and share memories on Friday, January 3, 2020 at Harrison Christian Church from 5:00pm-7:00pm. A Funeral Service will follow at 7:00pm with Brian Powell officiating. A Graveside Service will be held at 11:00am Saturday, January 4, 2020 at Washington County Memory Gardens. Mary’s grandsons and grandsons in-law will serve as pall bearers. Honorary pall bearers will be Mary’s great grandsons. Everyone who wishes to attend the Graveside is asked to meet at the cemetery by 10:50am. Her Sunday School Class, Thursday morning Bible Study members, special friends Rita and Ronnie Johnson have been requested to sit with the family during the Funeral Service. The ladies of the church will serve lunch to the family after the Graveside Service.
