He was born in Johnson City but spent most of his life in Barberton OH, where he worked for B&W and retired from there after many years of dedicated service. John attended Locus St. Church of Christ and was a proud member of The American Legion.
John was preceded in death by his by parents; Mack James and Elizabeth (Harrison) Hammitt, his first wife; Pansy Jane (Humphries) Hammitt, his second wife; Barbara Louis Hammit, brothers; Samuel and Floyd Hammitt, half-brother; Herbert Harrison, and sister; Mildred Vance.
Those left to cherish his memory include his sons; James Hammitt (Sandra) of Erwin, Jeff Hammitt (Brenda) of Perrysville OH, Joe Hammit of Johnson City, and Wayne Britt of Spruce Pine NC, along with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren..
The Hammitt family will honor John’s life with a Graveside on Friday November 8, 2019 at Monte Vista Memorial Park beginning at 12:00pm with Rev. Richard Lewis and Rev. Pat Whisnant officiating. Those who wish to attend are asked to meet at the cemetery by 11:50am.
The Hammittt family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of Four Oaks Health Care for the wonderful job they did keeping John comfortable in his final days.
