Billy “Joe” Garland

JOHNSON CITY - Billy “Joe” Garland, 83, Johnson City went home to be with the Lord, Tuesday, June 4, 2019 (his Coronation Day) in the Lakebridge Health Care Center.

He was a native of Johnson City and was the son of the late Elmer and Ruby Britt Garland. Mr. Garland was a veteran having served his country in the U.S Army and U.S. Navy. He retired also from Mountain Home Veterans Hospital. Mr. Garland was a member and Deacon of Upper Room Family Worship Center in Johnson City. He enjoyed working in his yard, singing gospel music and Praising the Lord. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by four brothers, Bobby, Guy, Jim and Wayne Garland and a sister, Mary Ruth Smith.

Survivors include his loving wife of 63 years,  Ruth Osborne Garland; two daughters, Dana Garland of Johnson City and Marti Watson of Knoxville; a brother, Harold Garland and wife, Vivian of Texas; a special friend, Nancy Peterson; a special niece, Amelia Osborne; several brothers and sisters-in-law, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Mr. Garland will be conducted at 3:30 PM Sunday, June 9, 2019 in the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home, 800 E. Watauga Avenue, Johnson City with Pastor Spencer Bumgardener officiating. The family will receive friends from 2:00 PM until the service hour. Graveside services will follow in Lyons Cemetery, Elizabethton. Military honors will be accorded by the Carter County Honor Guard. Pallbearers will be Paul, Matthew, Todd and Austin Osborne. Honorary pallbearers will be men of the Upper Room Family Worship Center.

The family would like to give special thanks to their church family for the love and support, a special thank you to Nancy Peterson an honorary sister that was constantly by his side until the end.
