Bessie Kate Young Katcham “Granny”

Bessie Kate Young Katcham “Granny” 103 years old passed away at JCMC May 31, 2019.

She lived with her daughter and son-in-law in Jonesborough, TN. She was born in Johnson City, July 18, 1915, and is the daughter of Frank David and Ola Lee Young, direct decedent of Robert Young.

Bess was a beloved spouse, mother, grandmother, sister and dear friend to all who knew her. As she often said, “I have enough love left in my heart for another 103 years”. Bess was a Licensed Practical Nurse and loved her profession. She retired at the age of 75 to travel to Hawaii and many other places with her family and friends.

 Bess is survived by her three children, Carol Boyd of Knoxville, Larry Katcham and wife Paula of Knoxville, Betsy Shaw and husband Gary of Jonesborough, (If you knew Betsy, you knew Bess). Grandchildren Randal Hart Lyle and wife Diane, Mary Kate Welch and husband Ralph, Jeffrey Scott Lyle and wife Dawn, Kellie Denise Hicks and husband Shawn, Karen Paige Tuck and husband John, and Kristina Leigh Hall and husband Scott. Great Grandchildren, Jenifer Lyle, Adam Lyle, Jessica Yow, Allen Mayes, Joe Mayes, Adam Welch, Amanda Welch Cripe, Zachary Williams, Hanna Hicks Scites, Haley Hicks, Nicole Thompson, Cameron Hall and our miracle baby and namesake to Granny KadiAnn Tuck. Great-Great Grandchildren Kolsen Lyle, Isaiah Yow, Noah Yow, Ethan Cripe, Caden Cripe, Lauren Cripe, David Mayes, Ashley Mayes, Tyler Mayes, Julie Mayes, JT Mayes and Breanna Mayes. Great-Great-Great Granddaughter Lilly Mayes, Sister-in-Law Kate Herlocker. Also survived by very special nieces and nephews.

Bess was preceded in death by her aforementioned Parents, her beloved Husband Willard James Katcham in 1958, Brothers Herman Young and wife Evelyn, and Blaine Young and wife Bert, Sisters Hattie Counts and husband Roy, and Nell Wilcox and husband Cecil, Sister-in-law Mae Early and husband Matt, Brother-in law Paul Katcham; and nephews Ray Young and Bobby Counts.

The family will receive friends from 10:00am -11:00am on Tuesday, June 4, 2019 at The Tetrick Funeral Services Chapel in Johnson City. Mrs. Patsy Leach, special lifelong friend, will officiate at the Celebration of Life service at 11:00 am. Also participating in the service are Rev. Steve Gott, former Minister and Friend, and Rev. Mike Sommers, current Pastor, Fairhaven United Methodist Church. Committal will be held directly following the funeral service at Monte Vista Cemetery and will be officiated by Rev. Rick Clowers, special longtime friend and Pastor. Family members and Fairhaven United Methodist Church men will serve as Honorary Pallbearers. Everyone is asked to meet at the cemetery by 12:15 pm Tuesday June 4, 2019.

The Family gives special appreciation to the Caregivers, Nurses (especially Tammy Wilhoit), and Dr. Chris Hemphill. Also, special Friend, Debbie Onks who did not miss one day of checking on Bess.
