He was a native of Holly, Colorado and son of the late Verne James and Roberta Gropp Kirby.
In addition to his parents, Dennis was preceded in death by his step-father, Samuel Kirby, and his sister, Edie Kern.
Dennis proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War. He served a total of twenty two years, nine months and was awarded several medals and awards during his time in the Air Force including the Vietnam Service Medal (with six oak leaf clusters), Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with “V” device (with eight oak leaf clusters), Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with palm, and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. After his time in the Air Force, Dennis worked at Northrop Grumman Corp, Bombardier INC, and Bell Helicopter.
He was a loving, dedicated, loyal husband, father, son, and brother. Dennis was of the Baptist faith. He was a Final Tribute Volunteer at the Mountain Home National Cemetery. Dennis enjoyed making music playlists. He also enjoyed theatre, sharing humorous stories with family and friends, and watching football. As a young man, he spent many hours running, hiking, playing sports, and riding his BMW motorcycle.
Those left to cherish Dennis’ memory include his loving wife of forty four years, Teresa A. James, his son, Samuel D. James, stepson, Ted Warren, sisters: Nancy Jankowski, and Karen Brackett; stepbrother, Bob Kirby, cousins: Diana Lee, Gina Cline, Mary Gropp McCrary, and Jack Pepper; his aunt, Noni Holtorff.
Dennis’ family will honor his life and his military career with a Graveside Service at 2:30 pm on Monday, August 13, 2018 at Mountain Home National Cemetery with full military honors. Everyone is asked to meet at the new cemetery annex by 2:20 pm.
