A lifelong native of Washington County, TN, she is the daughter of the late Spoolie and Lola Campbell. In addition to her parents, her loving husband, Virgil “Red” Cooper, and sister, Georgia Lee Covey, precedes her in death. Mary and Virgil made their home in Jonesborough, however, she was recently a resident at Four Oaks Health Care Center.
Mary was a member of Westside Christian Church, Jonesborough, TN. She loved attending church and hated to miss a service due to her health. She loved to share Jesus with her family and everyone she met. Mary was known for her ease in frequent conversation, even with complete strangers. Throughout her life she possessed a contagious smile, and she had a love for God’s people. Mary never wasted a moment by being quiet or still and her love and kindness captured the hearts of many. Her constant nurturing and faith will never be forgotten and it will continue to change and influence the lives of those who knew and loved her.
If Mary was not at church, she was baking, quilting, or outside tending to her flower and vegetable gardens. She was an avid gardener, and loved to be outside working in the earth. She could encourage any flower to bloom, and her vegetable garden produced an amazing bounty for her family. Mary had a huge family and never failed to bake each one of their favorite desserts on their birthdays. In addition to sweets, Grandmother Quilts were her specialty. She worked year round to ensure everyone had a new quilt or pillow at Christmas time. Her hands stitched love in every single quilt square.
Mary was blessed with a large and loving family. Those left to cherish her memory include: four sons, Fred Cooper of Johnson City, Gary Cooper and his wife Martha of Rogersville, Randy Cooper of Johnson City, and Scottie Cooper and his wife Rhonda of Jonesborough; siblings, George Campbell and his wife Mary Ruth of Jonesborough, Ann Ford of Tampa, FL, and Emma Treadway of Jonesborough; eight grandchildren, Shannon Crouthers, Sheri Cooper, Todd Cooper, Allison Cooper, Leanne Kirk, Clint Cooper, Robert Cooper, Chris Cooper, and Mackenzie Cooper; thirteen great-grandchildren, Dr. Derek Crouthers, Lexi Crouthers, Kobalt Cooper, Gabe Cooper, Bryce Cooper, Braxton Cooper, Emily Kirk, Jake Kirk, Eli Cooper, Landon Cooper, Easton Cooper, Caden Cooper, and Grayson Cooper; and several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Four Oaks Health Care Center, who watched over her and befriended her in her last months, JCMC, and The Washington County EMS who transported her in her time of need, and were always reassuring, kind, and respectful.
