Memorial Day observances, events and closings

National Moment of Remembrance: Memorial Day is a federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May. Formerly known as Decoration Day, it commemorates U.S. service members who died while on active duty. First enacted to honor Union and Confederate soldiers following the American Civil War, it was extended after World War I to honor Americans who have died in all wars. A National Moment of Remembrance takes place at 3 p.m. local time, on the holiday. Many people also observe the tradition of flying the United States flag at half-staff from dawn until noon local time.

Mountain Home National Cemetery. Volunteers will adorn gravesites at Mountain Home National Cemetery with American flags from 9:45 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Saturday, May 25. Volunteers are asked to meet the Veterans Affairs Medical Center gazebo at 9:45 a.m. Marking the gravesites will begin at 10:30. Participation is open to anyone. A Memorial Day ceremony is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Monday, May 27.

Doughboy rededication, Memorial Park Community Center. In conjunction with the 100th anniversary of the Congressional chartering of the American Legion, American Legion Kings Mountain Post 24 will conduct a dedication ceremony at the Doughboy Statue in Memorial Park Community Center at 9 a.m., Monday, May 27. Kings Mountain Post 24 erected the statue Nov. 11, 1935, with a bronze plaque honoring those who served and died during World War I. The statue was moved to its present location in 1974, at which time a bronze plaque was added to honor those who served and died during World War II, Korea and Vietnam. To commemorate the 100th year, Kings Mountain will add a third bronze plaque honoring all who served in the defense of the nation from 1974-present.

Johnson City Memorial Day Program: The Johnson City/Washington County Veterans Memorial will hold its 9th annual Memorial Day Program on Monday at 6 p.m. The memorial is located at the west end of Kiwanis Park at the corner of West Market Street and Veterans Way. Jonesborough's Board of Mayor & Alderman and Veteran's Affairs Committee will host the 2019 Veterans Memorial Concert on Sunday, May 26, at 2:30 p.m. at the Historic Jonesborough Visitors Center. The event will feature the Tennessee Highway Patrol Honor Guard presenting and retiring colors, along with the Daniel Boone High School Marine Junior ROTC. Musical entertainment will be provided by the Johnson City Community Concert Band. The event will be followed by a reception that is open to the public.

Memorial Day service at Tusculum: Tusculum University will hold a Memorial Day service Friday, May 24, to commemorate members of the military who’ve sacrificed their lives. The event, which will feature poem readings, a flag-folding ceremony and more, will take place at 11 a.m. in the lobby of the Thomas J. Garland Library on the university’s Greeneville campus. The public is invited.

Erwin Memorial Day Commemoration: The town of Erwin will host a special program to commemorate Memorial Day at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 26, at Veterans Memorial Park. The guest speaker will be Ray Tipton, commander of the American Legion Post 25.

Legion Street Pool, 111 Legion St., will open for the season on Memorial Day, Monday, May 27. Johnson City’s only public outdoor pool is open to all ages and includes a 50-meter outdoor pool with a diving well, one diving board and a small slide; pool open 10 a.m-6 p.m. Monday-Saturday and 1-6 p.m. on Sunday. The pool will be open on weekends only Aug. 4-Sept. 2. Admission is $3 for individuals 13 and older, $2 for individuals 12 and under, and free to those under the age of three. Children 12 and under must be accompanied by a caretaker age 16 or older.


The Johnson City Public Library will be closed on Sunday and Monday in observance of the Memorial Day holiday. The library will continue to be closed on Sundays for the duration of the summer. Summer hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, and the library is closed on Sunday. Hands On! Discovery Center, 1212 Suncrest Drive, Gray, will be closed Memorial Day.

The city of Johnson City offices will be closed Memorial Day. Garbage/recycling will be on regular schedule. Call 461-1643 for water/sewer emergencies.

Washington County government offices, including the courthouse, will be closed on Memorial Day.

Most city of Bristol offices and operations will be closed on Memorial Day. All offices will re-open on Tuesday for normal business hours.

The city of Elizabethton offices will be closed on Memorial Day. Monday through Thursday, garbage will be collected one day late with Thursday and Friday routes being collected on Friday.
