Ramsey is the ship’s culinary specialist. He is responsible for keeping the ship’s kitchen stocked with fresh and wholesome food. He oversees the menu, the cooking and serving the hard-working sailors onboard.
In a press release from the Navy, Ramsey said he enjoys the camaraderie and brotherhood that is created while serving on a ship. He has traveled the world, but says nothing beats it when the crew compliments him on the food.
On Saturday, Feb. 16, Ramsey will take part in the commissioning ceremony, when a ship officially enters naval service, for the USS Tulsa. The ship is described as a 21st-century combat ship sporting a trimaran hull that was designed from the keel up, according to a press release. It will allow close-to-shore operations as well as being able to conduct operations in open ocean.
The Johnson City Press reached out to Ramsey on social media to ask him about his service to our country, travel and to learn more about the Daniel Boone High School graduate.

What was your life like in East Tennessee?
I only lived in Tennessee for my junior and senior year. I went to Daniel Boone High School. My life there was amazing, though. I love everything about it. It’s beautiful; my family and I plan on retiring somewhere outside the Knoxville area.
Why did you choose to serve in the military?
We had the money to put me through college, that wasn’t an issue. My mentality was I just did 12 years of school. I didn’t want to go back, flunk out and waste my dad’s money. It was a great opportunity for me to see the world, go to college when I was ready and to serve my country.
What is life like in the Navy?
Life in the Navy is real amazing, as well as being very tough being away from family while deployed. The places I have traveled are Bahrain, Dubai, St. Thomas, Italy, Greece, Spain (and) Turkey. I have been stationed in Jacksonville, Florida; Lakehurst, New Jersey; and now currently San Diego, California.
What is the most rewarding part of being a culinary specialist and serving on the USS Tulsa?
The most rewarding part about being culinary is getting all the compliments from the crew about how good that certain dish was, and being able to boost the morale onboard the Tulsa. Also, we leave (soon) to commission the Tulsa, so it’s pretty awesome being a “plank-owner” and the first sailors onboard this brand new vessel.
What advice would you give to the people of the Tri-Cities?
Advice, hmm … If you’re having a bad day someone, somewhere, always has it worse. Be thankful and grateful for everything you have and don’t let negativity get you down. Your life is too short to sweat the small things. I don’t know, I’m not good with this kind of stuff.
