But luckily for last-minute shoppers, local small businesses still have unique options for anyone on the chronic procrastinator’s list. Here’s just a sampling ...
For the friend with lots of local pride
Boomtown and Co. is a local clothing company that shows community pride through unique design and comfortable merchandise.
Their designs, though casual, can be picked out of a crowd for the high-quality looks that center around local areas and themes. Especially popular is their “Dolly For President” items.
Others can be worn to show off local pride for places like Kingsport, East Tennessee State University and Boone Lake. Even Erwin has an elephant design all its own.
Additionally, the store sells hats, stickers and other clothing items. Boomtown and Co. also carries items from Duke Cannon Supply Co. like men’s soaps, chapstick, solid cologne, notebooks and more, the proceeds from which go to support veterans.
Boomtown and Co. has a few locations in the Tri-Cities, area including at 127 Spring St. in Johnson City, 217 Broad St. in Kingsport, and Label Restaurant in downtown Johnson City. Boomtown and Co. will also have a booth set up in the lower level of the Johnson City Mall for the Christmas season.
The coworker who is always down to try the newest restaurant
Some people have said that giving a gift card is just “phoning it in” at Christmas time. However, giving a gift card is not necessarily as impersonal as it can seem. Choosing a gift card to a store or place that the recipient loves to go or has wanted to try can be a great gift.
A gift card can also be a great gift for the “foodie” of the family, especially with how busy everyone gets during the holidays. There is no need to plan and they can enjoy the meal on their own time.
This is especially true for coffee gift cards. Those morning stops at Starbucks or Dunkin’ Donuts can really add up. Maybe consider giving a gift that makes mornings just a little less stressful.
The beer aficionado of the family (please drink responsibly!)
Beer culture is big in Johnson City. With a brewery seemingly every half-block, options are not limited. Consider for your beer-loving friend a growler of their favorite local brew. They’ll have a supply of their favorite beverage for holiday festivities and a growler to return and fill up again.
Another gift for the beer-obsessed is sitting right on a corner in the downtown area. Barley Waters not only has a host of rotating beer on draft, but a massive cooler of beers not readily available in-house. Assemble a fun 6-pack of beer and wrap it up for your friend to try. They might find their new favorite! Barley Waters also has a host of glasses, hats and shirts to go along with the gift.
Barley Waters is located at 100 Spring St. in Johnson City. It will be open 1-8 p.m. on Dec. 23, and noon-10 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 24.
