Applications for seasonal jobs at Parks and Rec now available

The Johnson City Parks and Recreation is now accepting applications for its vacant seasonal positions, which include numerous openings in athletics and maintenance roles, as well as camp counselors.

James Ellis, Parks and Recreation assistant director, said in the athletic department, there are a variety of job opportunities.

“We will be reviewing applications and accepting applications for tennis instructors for our summer tennis program, which begins June 1,” Ellis said. “Basically with that, it’s for the very young children … so there’s not a required certification per se, just general knowledge or playing experience is acceptable.”

He said the department will also be hiring adult and youth softball umpires and scorekeepers.

“For umpiring there is a certification that’s through the Amateur Softball Association and that basically consists of passing their national written exam, as well as coming to a training clinic. They can contact the athletic office for more detailed information as to when those are held,” Ellis said.

He said for scorekeepers, parks and recreation will provide a training session, but a general knowledge of softball scorekeeping is acceptable for anyone wishing to apply.

The athletics department is also seeking officials for the youth kickball program and no certification is required.

The department will be hiring lifeguards, as well as providing the required certification classes to become a lifeguard.

“We’re always hiring seasonal staff, which is general maintenance and labor. We’re hiring seasonal staff for mowing, weed eating … just general grounds work. Usually in our Park Services division we usually try … to bring on anywhere from a dozen to 18 seasonal staff for their division,” Ellis said.

Camp counselors are also needed this summer to help with Parks and Recreation’s summer camp, hosting a number of children from ages 6 to 14.

“Our camp counselors will just spend time with the children everyday, Monday through Friday, organizing various activities, outings, games … exercise programs,” Ellis said.

Training will be involved and counselors will have to learn first aid, CPR, the use of AEDs (automated external defibrilators), as well as other emergency management procedures.

Ellis said every applicant is put through a background test, in particular any person working with a minor.

He said while summer jobs usually cater more to high school and college students, retirees have also been known to apply for certain positions.

“We pay minimum wage. A lot of times that is attractive … to the high school kids or the college crowd because that basically gives them some spending money in the summer months. We find more of the retirees … in the role of umpires … some on our maintenance division and turf,” Ellis said.

“It’s a great opportunity to be involved with the lives of others, to improve the lives of others, to interact with … a wide variety of folks from all age groups, and all walks of life. It’s a way to give back to your community.”
