Who will win?

Staff Report • Nov 5, 2012 at 9:55 AM

After more than 1 1/2 years of primaries and campaigns, voters will finally decide the U.S. presidential election on Tuesday.

Many analysts consider the contest too close to call between the two major party candidates, incumbent President Barack Obama (D) and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney (R). Voters also have numerous third-party candidates to consider as alternatives.

In addition to voting in the U.S. presidential election, voters in our area will decide races for U.S. House of Representatives, U.S. Senate, the state General Assembly and local municipal offices, as well as key referendums in some locales. Voters in Unicoi County will weigh whether to levy a wheel tax on themselves, and those in both the city of Elizabethton and the town of Unicoi will consider whether to allow package stores in their limits.

For those who did not cast ballots during the early voting period, Election Day hours at Washington County polls for registered voters will be 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Opening hours vary by county. Check with your local election commission for details.

It’s important that you carry some form of approved photo identification when you go to the polls. Acceptable forms of photo ID include driver’s licenses, U.S. passports and government employee identification cards. College photo IDs, however, are not accepted.
