ELIZABETHTON — Police this morning identified the small child killed when a dump truck struck him at the intersection of Broad and Lynn streets Thursday. Police also named the driver.

The boy was identified as 4-year-old Joshua Holston. Capt. Joy Markland said in a press release the boy was walking with another juvenile and an adult, Tiffani Marie Holston. They were attempting to cross Broad Street in the crosswalk at the intersection of Lynn Avenue at 1:19 p.m.

As they were attempting to cross, Joshua ran into the path of the dump truck and was struck as the truck began to turn onto Lynn Avenue, Markland said. The truck was driven by Terry J. Kyte of Bristol.

The child was transported to Sycamore Shoals Hospital, but died later as a result of his injuries.

Markland said the investigation was being conducted by the police department’s Specialized Traffic Accident Reconstruction Team. The dump truck was being inspected by the Tennessee Highway Patrol as standard protocol for investigating accidents involving commercial vehicles.

Chief Matt Bailey said the busy intersection was closed for about 1 1/2 hours on Thursday afternoon as investigators carefully examined evidence at the scene. He said traffic was detoured around other blocks.

Bailey said the investigators would be examining all outside security cameras at surrounding b businesses that might have a view of the intersection.

No charges had been placed in the fatal accident, pending the completion of the investigation. Officer Douglas Combs is the lead investigator in the case. His supervisor is Major Greg Workman.
