ELIZABETHTON — The day of protecting the community started earlier than scheduled for Lt. Travis Ludlow of the Carter County Sheriff’s Department on Friday.

Ludlow was driving to the sheriff’s department to report for his shift duty when he noticed several small brush fires burning on the far side of the northbound lane of U.S. Highway 19E near the Lovers Lane exit and Holston Mountain Road.

Ludlow said several of the fires were small and he was able to extinguish them by stomping on the flames. The Stoney Creek Volunteer Fire Department soon responded and put out the larger flames.

Ludlow said the fires were too far apart to have started from a single source of ignition. He said the fires could possibly have been intentionally set because of the spacing and no apparent source of ignition.

Ludlow said one of the firefighters on the scene told him the fire department had responded to a similar fire at the same location.
