See your favorite Christmas classic like you’ve never seen it before.

“A Christmas Story” is a classic movie to play during the Christmas season. It’s good for the whole family, especially for kids, and talks about the real meaning of Christmas beyond gifts and other material things.

This season, take advantage of an opportunity to see this classic in a new light: live.

This weekend, “A Christmas Story: The Musical,” is coming to the stage at the Johnson City Community Theatre beginning Thursday and running through Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

The story of Ralphie and his determination to get his Red Ryder B.B. gun for Christmas comes to life on the stage with numbers like, “When You’re a Wimp,” “Sticky Situation,” and “Somewhere Hovering Over Indiana.”

“The story and much of the lines follow the original film, the main difference comes from many of the memorable moments are just turned into musical numbers,” said David Hyde, director of the show and head of marketing at the Johnson City Community Theatre.

The cast is comprised of mostly kids, with a few adults to round it off.

Hyde says that fans of the show will love it and those who haven’t see it will still love the story. The iconic scene where flick gets his tongue stuck to the flagpole? Still included.

The show is full of laughs and heartwarming moments.

“This is my first show directing kids, but man, these kids will make you laugh and cry,” Hyde said.

And of course, the show has a great message that has spoken to audiences since the movie’s release.

“The Parker family will teach us all that Christmas isn't about getting the gift we wanted, the turkey, or anything like that, its about spending time with your family and remembering what the holidays are really about,” Hyde said.

“A Christmas Story: The Musical,” opens Thursday Dec. 6 and runs until Dec. 15. Showtimes this week are Friday through Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets are $14.
