Spike it Up Tweetsie Challenge starts Sept. 16: Johnson City Parks and Recreation is offering a new way to improve fitness for runners, hikers and bicyclists 18 and older. The eight-week Spike it Up Tweetsie Challenge will run from Sept. 16-Nov. 10 and costs $8 per person. Each week, participants will set goals to hike, run and/or ride on Johnson City’s Tweetsie Trail for 150 minutes. The program will include a kickoff meeting, group excursions like geocaching, and a special celebration at the program’s conclusion. Everyone will receive a Spike it Up T-shirt. Register in person at Memorial Park Community Center, 510 Bert St., by Monday, Sept. 17. For more information, call 423-434-6237.

Contra dance: The Historic Jonesborough Dance Society will hold a contra dance and on Saturday, Sept. 15, at Serenity Knoll Farm, 542 Bacon Branch Road, Jonesborough. Admission to the dance is $7 and $5 for students and children. All dances are smoke, alcohol and fragrance free. No partner is necessary. Families and children are welcome. Performing for the contra dance will be Windmill from Asheville, North Carolina, which consists of Laurie Fisher on keyboard and Steve Trisman on fiddle. Caller Abigail Hobart will conduct a class for beginners at  7 p.m. where newcomers and experienced dancers alike will learn the basic steps, formations and flow of contra dance. Barbecue supper: The Telford Ruritan Club will host a barbecue supper on Friday, Sept. 14, from 5-7 p.m. The Telford Ruritan Club is located at the corner of Telford School House Road and Telford-New Victory Road. The menu consists of barbecue sandwiches, baked beans, cole slaw, desserts and assorted drinks. Meals may be purchased for a donation and will be available for carryout.

More barbecue: Leesburg Ruritan will also have a barbecue and all the “fixin”s on Saturday, Sept. 15, from 4:30-7 p.m. The cost is $10 for adults and $7 for 12 and under, eat-in or take-out. Address is 1429 Old Stagecoach Road in Jonesborough.

Even more barbecue: The Greenwood Ruritan Club will host a barbecue dinner on Saturday, Sept. 15, from 5-7 p.m. at 118 Crockett Road (near the intersection of Mill Spring Road and Greenwood Drive). The meal will consist of barbecue, fried corn, slaw, chips and baked beans. Sugar-free barbecue sauce will be available. The cost is $8 for adults and $4 Children. To-go meals are also available. New membership is welcomed.

Reunion: The Science Hill High School Class of 1978 will have its 40-year reunion Friday, Sept. 14, from 7-10 p.m. at the Atlantic Alehouse on McClure Street in downtown Johnson City. Festivities will continue on Saturday at 10 a.m with golf at Pine Oaks. The cost is $40 and can be preregistration can be made with Matthew Clark at 423-534-7830. A tour of Science High High School will commence at 10. 

Fitzgerald reunion: The Fitzgerald Family will have their reunion on Sunday, Sept. 16, at Crossroads Christian Church, 1330 Suncrest Drive, Gray, from 12:30-3 p.m. Attendees are asked to bring a covered dish. For more information, call Penny Fitzgerald at 423-797-0341.
