Johnson City Zine Fest was born out of of a desire to showcase self-published authors and artists in the region, said organizer and “zine” (magazine) publisher Suzie Kelly. Even though the free festival is entering its 4th year, Kelly said she’s still finding people new to the local culture surrounding self-published art.
“We’re pretty excited to be on year four and that it’s going to continue on,” Kelly said. “People seem to really like it.
“I think a lot of people like it because it’s new to them. A lot of people will come to me and ask me about zines, how it works . . . it’s pretty exciting that people are still discovering it.”
Tables open at 6 p.m. at the Willow Tree, and the evening will be accompanied with music by Liz The Prophetess, Momma Molasses and Mahto & The Loose Balloons. An after party will follow the event this year across the street at The Hideaway with Achy, Celia Verbeck and The Holifields taking the stage.
Kelly said that the even has been received well for the past four years, so she and other organizers are going to look into a “zine mobile” moving forward so she can market local publications on the go.
Zine Fest takes place from 6 to 11 p.m. at The Willow Tree Coffeehouse and Music Room in downtown Johnson City. The after party at the Hideaway begins at 10:30 p.m. Zine Fest is sponsored by Johnson City Brewing Company, The Main Street Pizza Company and The NET360.
