Local sporting and outdoors store Mahoney’s Outfitters has everything that one could need for spending time outdoors.
For the Meet the Mountains Festival, Mahoney’s Outfitters has arranged for many of the brands that they carry, such as Northface, Nemo Outdoor Equipment, Stanley and many others, to donate various outdoor gear, clothing items and equipment for a silent auction during the festival.
All proceeds for the Gear for Good silent auction will be donated to the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy.
Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy is a an organization that maintains, protects and conserves land, long and short-term, in Tennessee and North Carolina.
Hunter Greene, who handles community relations at Mahoney’s Outfitters, hopes that the gear in the auction and the business’ presence at the festival will start a conversation, and that will encourage people to get out into the outdoors more or try something maybe they’ve never done before but have always wanted to try.
“My goal for this festival is to ... help people realize how much we’ve got going on around here and what there is to offer,” Greene said. “But more than anything is when people come up and talk to me, and have questions, (my goal is) is to get them engaged and interested in the outdoors in general.”
Greene says that they do not have a monetary goal for the silent auction, because funds can go one way or another. He hopes to raise as much money as they can for the conservancy.
“My goal is to get everybody outside and enjoy what we’ve got out here,” Greene said.
The Gear for Good silent auction will take place right next to the Mahoney’s tent in Founders Park beginning at 5 p.m. Friday and continuing through Saturday.
The Meet the Mountains Festival will take place beginning at 5 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 24, in Founders Park in downtown Johnson City. It will continue until 11 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 25, providing opportunities on- and off-site to explore what outdoor recreation the area has to offer.
