Bluegrass, Barter and more: 7 Out & About Things to Do

Here are seven ways to enjoy life in the Tr-Cities area:

1. Umoja in downtown Johnson City. The annual Umoja Festival will be held Friday and Saturday in downtown Johnson City with live music and dance, stilt walkers, cage fighting, food vendors, arts and crafts vendors and more, and a children’s area that includes face painting, a coloring contest, inflatables and a petting zoo. 2. Founders After 5. The final show for this season’s Founders After Five Series will be held Friday at Founders Park, 120 Commerce St. with Demon Waffle and their mix of reggae, rock, punk, soul, funk and ska. Bring a picnic or order takeout from downtown restaurants, non-profits sell beer and soft drinks, 5 p.m., music begins around 6, free. (downtownjc.com)

3. BCMM with bluegrass and Shape Note. The Birthplace of Country Music Museum, 520 Birthplace of Country Music Way, Bristol, Va. will host the Old Fields Singers on Saturday from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. for a free Shape Note Sing. All ages, no experience necessary. On Monday, Bluegrass 45, from Japan, will play at 7 p.m. Doors open at 6:30, $20. (423-573-1927, www.birthplaceofcountrymusic.org)

4. Sherlock Holmes at Barter. “Sherlock Holmes and The American Problem” opened Thursday at Barter Theatre’s Gilliam Stage, 127 W. Main St., Abingdon, Va. and shows this weekend on Saturday at 8 p.m. Mystery, suspense and deceit as Holmes solves a case involving Victorian England and the Wild West. Through Nov. 11. 5. ArtRAGEous at Niswonger. Enjoy interactive art and music with ArtRAGEous at Niswonger Performing Arts Center, 212 Tusculum Blvd., Greeneville on Tuesday at 7 p.m. Raffle tickets will be sold at the door for a chance to win one of the paintings created during the show. $25 orchestra, $20 mezzanine, $15 balcony, $10 students. 6. Steel Woods, Shimmy and Sammy at Capone’s. The Steel Woods, joined by Shimmy & the Burns and Sammy Guns will play Friday night at 8 at Capone’s, 227 E. Main St., $10. 7. Michale Graves at Hideaway. Michale Graves, ex-Misfits frontman will stop in Friday night at The Hideaway, 235 E. Main St. to help promote his new album, “When Worlds Collide” during “The Beginning of the End Fall Tour 2017.” Tickets are $10 advance, $13 day of show, ages 18-up. Show begins at 8.
