Letters: Congress should give Dreamers a chance

Because President Trump has discontinued the Deferred Action Childhood Arrivals program and called on Congress to deal with the issue within the next six months, as concerned citizens we need to act. It is imperative to pass the Dream Act, which has been reintroduced with bipartisan sponsorship in this session of Congress.

It would give the 800,000 young people, recipients of DACA, an opportunity to stay in the United States and pursue a pathway to citizenship. These young adults are in our neighborhoods, our workplaces, our colleges and our houses of worship. They are making a significant contribution in all of these places.

They are also making an important economic impact. Studies show that over the next 10 years, if this act passes, the U.S. deficit could be reduced by $1.4 billion and revenue could be increased by $2.3 billion.

But, as a Christian, the economic impact is not my main concern. This is a matter of obeying the commandments to love neighbor and to welcome the stranger. It is a moral issue. It is an issue of the heart. I can’t imagine anything more heartless than deporting the DACAs.

The conditions in their parents’ countries of origin, conditions that caused their parents to seek a better life for themselves and their children, are likely not much better than when they left. So they would be in a less than desirable environment if deported. For many of them, the culture would be strange and unfamiliar.

I pray that people of faith and compassion will take this matter to heart and act by urging Congressman Phil Roe and Sens. Lamar Alexander and Bob Corker to do justice to these young immigrants by passing the Dream Act. They came to the United States through no fault of their own. They are as fully American as any other young adults in our land.

Let’s give them an opportunity to continue making their contributions, for their sake and for the good of the country.
