Hoffman California Fabrics was founded by Rube Hoffman in 1928. Hoffman was a New York textile jobber and a veteran in the garmet district. Since that time, Hoffman California Fabrics has been designing and manufacturing premium screenprinted and hand-dyed fabrics for independent retailers.
In 1988, the company began the Hoffman Challenge, which has grown to be a unique traveling quilt and home decor collection. Currently, 12 collections travel coast-to-coast within the United States and Canada. This year the Hoffman Challenge Traveling Exhibit is celebrating its 30th year.
The challenge started with 94 enthusiastic quilters, and the number of entries has grown to more than 700. While the majority of the entries come from the U.S, a wide variety of international entries are also received.
Each year, the top entries are grouped into traveling collections and visit quilt and fiber shows, seminars, quilt shops and quilt- and doll-makers guilds in North America.
All entries must include a designated fabric each year. The 2018 selection that will be showcased is Fabric Q4429-633-Prism from the Shine On! Collection. The 2019-20 Challenge will feature Hoffman’s First Stitch collection, with fabrics such as vintage and antique, and will require the use of six mandatory fabrics in each piece.
The exhibition will be on display at the Visitors Center & Old Town Emporium Gift Shop through July 28. The center’s normal operating hours are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information on the Hoffman Challenge, visit hoffmanchallenge.com or call 423-753-1010.
