The local club stages a show once every two years, and members bring specimens of cut flowers, herbs, tree and shrub branches, and houseplants they have grown themselves for horticulture displays and floral design exhibits for which members interpret themes and genres.
The displays are judged, and ribbons are awarded.
This year's show, inspired by the historic park, is entitled “Timeless,” with themes that evoke the history of Sycamore Shoals and of gardening and floral art. Additional displays will include “botanic arts” (wearable art made from dried plant materials), educational posters, garden photography, and a youth exhibit by the students of Girls, Inc.
Shady Oaks is dedicating this year's show to the memory of Janet Powell, a devoted club member who passed away suddenly this spring.
The show can be viewed in Sycamore Shoals' lobby, meeting room, and museum from 1 to 4 p.m. Friday, September 7, and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, September 8. For more information, call Shady Oaks member Anne Reid at 423-794-8842 or the park at 423-543-5808. If you are interested in more information about the club, visit shadyoaksgardenclub.org.
