Today in Johnson City History: October 3

Oct. 3, 1889: Citizens Bank opened and was ready for the “transaction of a regular and legitimate banking business.” The bank was located in the Harr building at the corner of Main and Spring streets. A fire-proof vault had been built with a large burglar-proof safe.

Oct. 3, 1903: The National Soldiers Home opened.

Oct. 3, 1967: An 18-year-old Johnson City resident was jailed in Sullivan County after a “gangfight” involving 13 people left another youth hospitalized in Bristol.

Oct. 3, 1987: The Charlie Daniels Band and Gregg Allman played at Freedom Hall Civic Center.

Oct. 3, 2008: The Johnson City Commission on first reading approved the installation of traffic cameras at several intersections.
