Today in Johnson City History: September 23

 Sept. 23, 1886: The Comet reported that George T. Williams Jr. and Hi Netherly had entered the ring to decide the boxing championship in Johnson City. Before the first round was finished, though, the police interfered and stopped the fun.

Sept. 23, 1923: An article in the Johnson City Chronicle proclaimed that “Johnson City’s biggest days are yet to come” and that Johnson City was the “Gateway of the Appalachians.” 

Sept. 23, 1977: Jimmy Buffet performed at Freedom Hall Civic Center.

Sept. 23, 2006: Science Hill bested 10 other prep squads to win the Western Carolina University Invitational 5K race. The Hilltoppers were led by sophomore Bryson Walker, who placed sixth overall with a time of 17:48
