Today in Johnson City History: January 28

Jan. 28, 1901: The Old Soldiers Home, Mountain Home, now known as the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center, was created by an act of Congress.

Jan. 28, 1928: The First Church of the Brethren sanctuary was dedicated. The church was located at the corner of East Chilhowie Avenue and Elm Street, and was demolished to make way for what is now Interstate 26.

Jan. 28, 1935: Movies showing in downtown Johnson City included “The Little Minister” with Katherine Hepburn at The Majestic and “Romance in the Rain” with Roger Pryor and Heather Angel.
