Jan. 22, 1935: The Johnson City Press published the Popeye comic strip for the first time. The character began appearing in the King Features Syndicate strip “Thimble Theater” by cartoonist E.C. Segar in 1929 and soon took over as the lead role.
Jan. 22, 1950: Marine Corps officers conducted an emergency meeting at the John Sevier Hotel in Johnson City to oppose proposed 1951 U.S. defense budget cuts.
Jan. 22, 1997: South Side Elementary School Principal John K. Boyd Jr. told the Johnson City Press the school’s staff was exploring the possibility of a year-round schedule. The school indeed operated on the alternative calendar for a number of years afterward before reverting to standard calendar.
Jan. 22, 2009: TaRonda Wiles’ 30-point performance led the East Tennessee State University women’s basketball team to an 87-57 win over Campbell at Memorial Center. ETSU improved to 8-1 in the Atlantic Sun Conference and 10-7 overall.
