Dr. Arnold Hopland said he expects his wife will soon be released from a Tokyo hospital within the next few days and returned to the United States after testing negative for the coronavirus. Jeanie Hopland has been held in the Tokyo hospital since testing positive for the virus more than a week ago. The couple has been separated since that earlier testing, with Arnold Hopland first being quarantined in his cabin on the Diamond Princess cruise ship in Yokohama and then taken to a dormitory in the National Tax College near Tokyo.

The Hoplands are from Elizabethton and were on the last day of a cruise when they were quarantined because of a coronavirus outbreak on their cruise ship. That ship soon became the most concentrated coronavirus outbreak outside of China.

While Jeanie Hopland is expected to return immediately to the United States, Arnold Hopland remains quarantined in his dormitory room. While he has never tested positive for coronavirus, he is being held in quarantine because of the chances he came into contact with infected passengers and crew. The doctor said he has received word that the could be released by March 8.
