Unfortunately, according to a study by the University of Scranton, more than 90 percent of these resolutions — everything from getting healthier to taking more time for self-care — end in failure.
But Jonathan Seagroves, the general manager at Planet Fitness, said a good way to stick to your resolution is to have a support group or a group of friends working toward the same goals. Because many worked together to reach their fitness goals, 2018 was a good year for New Year’s resolutions at his gym.
“We had a few slack off or cancel, but the majority of people that joined in January (2018) stuck around,” he said. “The biggest thing is that — in order to really stick with it — you have to make a plan that allows you to start a rhythm, and once you do that, it’s like everything else you do every day.
“It’s definitely something that will help you out if you have a group of friends to go with to make it a challenge. That’s something that motivates a lot of people,” he continued. “When they get with a group and start a plan, a lot of people tend to stick with it.”
At A New Image Weight Loss Clinic, Owner Connie Hicks said she’s noticed many who set out to lose weight as part of their resolutions. In her years owning the business since 1995, she’s found that weight loss clinics often ramp up their advertising to promote new deals and discounts as the new year approaches.
“Usually it’s our busiest time because it’s everyone’s New Year’s resolution,” she said. “When you open a coupon book, it’s one weight loss clinic after another.”
While she said 80 percent of the people who sign up there reach their goals, she said it’s often hard for some folks to kick old eating habits. That's where encouraging consultants and friends come in.
“I think that’s the most important thing,” she said of the role of positive encouragement in reaching New Year’s resolution goals.
