Even if you’re already a registered organ donor, you can still help to promote organ donations by sharing the Tennessee Donor Service’s newest campaign, #BeTheGift on your social media pages.
“Our goal is to close that gap between those who are eligible to donate and those who are actually registered,” Sharon Pakis, manager of public relations and education at TDS, said. “You can actually give the gift of life to another individual who is waiting for that transplant. That person could be a friend, a neighbor, a coworker or even someone in your family.
“You can save up to eight lives by being an organ donor.”
TDS launched the #BeTheGift campaign due to an overwhelming amount of patients awaiting a transplant not just within our state, but across the country as well.
“Nationally, there are over 115,000 people waiting to receive an organ or tissue transplant,” Pakis said. “In our state, there are 2,900 waiting.”
According to Pakis, every hour, 10 people are added to that waiting list, which is why the organization aimed to spread awareness about organ donation and registration.
To participate in the movement, Tennesseans are encouraged to post selfies with a big red bow on social media platforms such as Instagram and Facebook with the hashtag #BeTheGift.
“The big red bow symbolizes that we can all be a gift,” Pakis said. “We love seeing all the pictures of people with the bows across our state.”
TDS offers the big red bow filter on the campaign’s website. It’s free, quick and easy to share to your social media pages.
“You can save a life,” Pakis said. “You can be a hero for someone else.”
