Tennessee House Speaker Cameron Sexton, R-Crossville, has named State Rep. Matthew Hill, R-Jonesborough, chairman of the newly created House Appropriations Subcommittee, according to a press release from the state’s Republican caucus on Friday.

“This powerful new subcommittee was created to better examine the size and significant impact of the budget, to closely analyze and research the intricate details that make up the process for formulating it, as well as all components of the annual budget document including items related to education, healthcare, criminal justice, and economic investment, and other spending areas,” the press release said.

According to the release, committee members will oversee aspects of the budgetary process, and focus on analyzing governmental departments and agencies “to ensure they are operating in an efficient and fiscally responsible manner.”

“I am pleased Representative Hill has agreed to serve as chairman of the House Appropriations Subcommittee,” Sexton said in the release. “His institutional knowledge related to all financial aspects of state government and our budget make him the right person to lead this committee. Chairman Hill has a strong track record of leadership as Deputy Speaker and ensuring accountability as TennCare Subcommittee Chairman, and his efforts leading this new subcommittee will benefit our entire state.”

“I appreciate Speaker Sexton asking me to serve as chairman of the new House Appropriations Subcommittee because he believes my experience and knowledge of the budgetary process will ensure this powerful committee is successful,” Hill said in the release. “Our state budget is the most important bill we pass every year because it impacts all of our citizens. Tennessee was recently ranked number one for fiscal stability, and our work on this committee will ensure we retain our ranking and remain a national economic leader.”
