Several commissioners rushed to Von Cannon’s aid and he appeared to be dazed but was not struggling. The meeting ended a short time later. Many of the commissioners were especially concerned because Von Cannon had announced that he was undergoing treatment for serious health problems.
But Von Cannon appeared in good shape and good sprits on Tuesday when he attended the swearing in ceremony at Elizabethton City Hall for newly elected and re-elected Councilmen Richard Barker, Bill Carter, Wes Frazier and Mike Simerly.
Prior to the ceremony, Von Cannon said that he was awaiting word from his doctor on what had caused his Monday night problem, but prior to getting the word from doctors, he said he suspected he might have suffered a ministroke.
Von Cannon appeared energetic and in full control of his faculties on Tuesday morning. He described his Monday night scare and made it clear he was fully alert at the time he fell.
“At first, I thought it was vertigo. I sometimes have a problem with that.” He said he has learned to use the Epley technique to overcome the effects of vertigo and was trying that when he fell.
Asked if he had lost consciousness, Von Cannon said he remained alert. “I used to box Golden Gloves when I was young and I never got knocked out. I have never been unconscious,” Von Cannon said.
Despite his scare, Von Cannon took things in stride on Tuesday, watching the swearing in and congratulating the men the County Commission will be working with to achieve joint results for the next four years.
