Elizabethton Library has to tell book donors "thanks, but no thanks"

ELIZABETHTON — If you are cleaning out that old room with the bookcase full of old books, don’t even think of donating them to the Elizabethton/Carter County Public Library. Too many other house cleaners have beaten you to the donation box and there is no room.

Renita Barksdale, director of the library, said so many people have donated books recently that the library has had to use some of its resources to rent two storage spaces. “They are filled to the brim,” she said.

She said it is nice to have the love and support of people who want to help a library by donating books, but there just too much of a good thing at the moment.

The library posted the change in its book acceptance policy on its Facebook page last week. The posting informed potential donors that: “Thank you to everyone who has donated books to the library! As of Aug. 31st we are NO LONGER accepting book donations until after our next book sale on Sept. 27th-29th.”

So, those who can wait until the end of September, there may yet be a chance to clean up that old book case and still do something good for the library. Lets hope the library has a very successful book sale this month.
