Prosecutors are moving from their current space in the George P. Jaynes Justice Center to new offices at 107-113 Jackson Blvd. in Jonesborough later this year
The Washington County Budget Committee voted Wednesday to approve a four-year lease agreement. The deal calls for the county to pay the state half the cost for the lease, which comes to $69,882 annually.
The DA’s office is expected to be in its new space by the first of October. The lease arrangement must next be approved by the County Commission at its meeting on July 23.
County Commissioner Joe Grandy, who chairs the Budget Committee, told his colleagues the move would give prosecutors some much-needed room to do their jobs. He said the DA’s office current space in the justice center is very cramped.
“It’s like stuffing 10 elephants in a VW,” Grandy said.
In other business Monday:
• Committee members approved spending $49,8000 from the county’s capital projects fund for CHA Design/Construction Solutions to develop a concept plan for athletic facilities at the new Boones Creek Middle School. The firm is expected to decide the configuration of soccer/softball fields at the site.
County Commissioner Rick Storey said Johnson City Commissioner Todd Fowler has made “positive comments” about the city working with the county on the project.
• The committee voted to spend $9,250 to replace a garage door at the Washington County Detention Center. Sheriff Ed Graybeal said parts to repair the sally port door, which is used to transport inmates to and from the jail, are no longer available.
• Officials with the Washington County Election Commission have asked for funds from the county to cover the cost of liability insurance for the election administrator and the five election commissioners. Those officials have been classified as state employees and are not covered by the county’s liability plan.
It will cost $10,000 to provide such coverage for election officials.
