Volunteers will prepare returns Monday nights at the credit union’s community room in Gray, Thursday nights at Tusculum and Saturday mornings at rotating sites, including Johnson City, Feb 17 and March 24 at Grandview Christian Church, and Feb. 10 and Feb. 24 at the Elizabethton Public Library.
The IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program offers a free alternative that provides the same fast refunds as paid preparers do, according to a recent news release. Last year, 635 clients saved an average of more than $200 compared to fee-based services.
“Tusculum is thrilled to be part of the VITA program this year and hopes to expand the service to reach more people in the region,” said Dr. James Hurley, president of Tusculum College. “With service to the community so ingrained in our mission as a college, the VITA program is an additional way that we can engage our community through service in an area that is a significant need in our region.”
Eligible taxpayers include people with annual incomes of less than $54,000, anyone with a physical disability, non-English-speaking citizens and people older than 55.
