The East Tennessee State sophomore made match play after firing a two-under-par 69 at Pebble Beach Golf Links on Tuesday. That left him tied for 10th after 36 holes of stroke play.
He will take on Zach Murray of Australia at 2:50 p.m. on Wednesday in the round of 64. Rhea, a Jonesborough resident who played for Science Hill, finished stroke play at 142, one under par. He had opened with a 73 at Spyglass Hill on Monday.
Before match play begins, there will be a playoff for the final spot Wednesday morning. Twenty-four players will go out for one place, the 64th seed. Those players finished four over.
Daniel Hillier and Cole Hammer earned co-medalist honors after finishing at 6-under-par 137, while Andrew Alligood finished in third at 5-under-par 138. Rhea was one of 18 golfers to finish below par in stroke play.
Wednesday’s action will be televised on FS1 from 5-8 p.m. (EDT).
