Vikings edge Hilltoppers for district title

BLOUNTVILLE — After Science Hill took round 1, Tennessee High took round 2.

One week after the Hilltoppers won the conference golf meet, Tennessee High won the District 1, Larger Schools Tournament 300-307 on Monday at Tri-Cities Golf Club. It now sets up a winner-take-all scenario at next week’s Region 1 tournament with only the winning team advancing to state.

Playing under perfect conditions, the Hilltoppers ended with scores of 1-over 73 from Jackson Skeen, a 77 from Sean Anderson, a 78 from Tarun Hoskere and their choice of 79’s by Carter Counts and Gavin Nickels.

But, the Vikings countered with a 72 from individual medalist Jet Tickle, a 74 from Stone Cozart, a 75 from Jack Tickle and a 79 from Davis Hall.

Science Hill coach Kevin Vannoy said Tennessee’s High score of 300 was his team’s goal since they felt it would win the tournament.

“Our guys have been pretty consistent all year, although there were some days we went lower,” Vannoy said. “But, hats off to Tennessee High with a 72, 74, 75 and 79. It’s not that we played bad. They just played better today. We said 300 was a goal and today it won it.”

Dobyns-Bennett was the third and final team that qualified for region with a 324.

Daniel Boone finished fourth at 340, but improved 40 strokes from the previous week with No. 1 player Casey Whiting back in the lineup.

“We would have liked to have gotten that third spot,” Boone coach Scott Martin said. “Earlier in the year, we felt like we had a chance, but we’ve been struggling lately. Today, we played the front nine really well and gave me hope. I’m proud of them and we’ve improved a lot over the last week.”

Whiting with an 82 and Noah Little with an 85 qualified as individuals, along with Ethan Mays and Randy Warren from Sullivan East and Jacob Cox from Sullivan South.

Other Boone efforts included Hunter Adams with an 86, Cam Anderson with an 87 and Nick Brock with an 89.

David Crockett also showed improvement, down 24 strokes from the conference tournament. Luke Larkins, Zeke Adams and Seth Bible all broke 100 for the Pioneers.

“We’ve gotten better every week,” Crockett coach Drew Pettit said. “We had personal bests out there and that’s what you want on the last day of the season.”

It won’t be the last day of the season for Daniel Boone’s girls Abby Yarbrough, McKenzie Miller and Baylor Padgett, who qualified for next week’s regional tournament as individuals. The same was true for Science Hill’s Lillian Qin who shot an 82, the low score for any individual not part of the top three teams, and Kim Gibson from Volunteer.

Dobyns-Bennett took the girls’ championship with a 153, getting a 74 from individual medalist Isabella Vanderbeist and a 79 from Katrina Scott. Tennessee High finished 12 strokes back with an 81 from Lily Self and an 84 from Ivy Foran. Sullivan South’s Kara Carter and Karli Goff combined for a 171 to finish third.

The teams and qualified individuals now move on to Morristown Country Club next Monday for the Region 1 tournament.
