Editor’s Note: This is part of a series of year-in-review stories throughout May that will focus on the top achievements by area high schools in the 2019-20 athletic season.

There were several highlights for Daniel Boone during the school year, including the volleyball team making a run to Murfreesboro.

The football team also had a string of impressive performances and girls basketball made it to within one game of the state tournament.

TOP OF THE LIST

A strong start provided momentum that carried throughout the volleyball season, and Daniel Boone eventually battled its way to the District 1-AAA championship.

The Lady Trailblazers finished runner-up in the region, but went on the road to knock off Knox Farragut in the sectional. In the state tournament, Boone lost to eventual champion Brentwood in the first round before being eliminated by Cleveland.

FOOTBALL

There was reason to believe, from the outside looking in at least, Daniel Boone’s football team was headed for a long season after a 1-4 start that included blowout-shutout losses to Tennessee High and Dobyns-Bennett.

But the Trailblazers regrouped with six straight wins and earned a 32-3 Class 5A playoff win over Knox Halls. The season ended with a 28-12 second-round loss to South-Doyle.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

After the calendar turned to January, the Lady Trailblazers had the right stuff against everybody except Science Hill. Boone would lose four times to the Lady Hilltoppers, including the region final.

But Boone still won 20 games, reached the Class AAA sectional — where it was competitive against Maryville — and had the memory of a thrilling triple-overtime win over Jefferson County in the region semifinals.

BOYS BASKETBALL

A nice stretch in late January — a win over David Crockett, a 91-point explosion in defeating Tennessee High, and a tight three-point loss to Class AA power Greeneville — put the Trailblazers in position for a strong finish.

Unfortunately Boone couldn’t sustain the momentum, losing five of its last six games and getting eliminated in the first round of the district by Tennessee High.

OTHER TOP EFFORTS

Girls soccer

Taking traditional powers Science Hill, Tennessee High and Dobyns-Bennett out of the equation, the Lady Trailblazers were dominant against everybody else.

They won nine of their other 10 games and reached the district semifinals before being eliminated by the Lady Hilltoppers.

Cross country

It was a top 10 finish for Boone in the boys’ state meet, racing into the No. 8 spot. Conner Wingfield was the top individual finisher with a No. 16 showing.

The girls also took the No. 8 position with Kamryn Wingfield leading the Boone pack at No. 22.

Wrestling

Boone had two wrestlers make it to the state tournament. Jacob Spurlock was a region finalist at 220 pounds and Jesse Bowman earned a state berth at 160 pounds.
