A rough start was too much for Cloudland to overcome on Friday night.

The Highlanders saw their football season come to a close with a 29-0 loss to Oliver Springs in the second round of the TSSAA Class 1A playoffs at Orr Field.

Cloudland finished the year with a 6-6 record, after winning five of their last seven games.

Oliver Springs (10-2) advances to take on Greenback in the quarterfinals next Friday.

OLIVER SPRINGS JUMPS OUT EARLY

Cloudland found itself in a first-quarter hole, trailing 14-0 before running its first offensive play.

On the opening drive, the Bobcats went 61 yards on 12 plays and took a 7-0 lead when Trey Boswell scored on a 12-yard run. The ensuing kick return saw Oliver Springs jump on a fumble, and six plays later Boswell scored from four yards out with 3:19 to play in the first quarter.

Cloudland marched down the field with some strong runs from Seth Birchfield, Hunter Shell and Hunter Blair, but a tipped pass resulting ended the drive with an interception. Triston Lacy ended the next Oliver Springs drive as he stripped the ball, and neither team was able to get on the board until OS added a touchdown with just over a minute remaining in the half to take a 22-0 lead.

‘LANDERS CONTINUE TO FIGHT

In the second half, Cloudland continued to battle.

After Oliver Springs took advantage of a Cloudland turnover to push the lead to 29-0, the ‘Landers methodically marched down the field. However, the drive was stopped at the 1-yard line with two minutes remaining in the third quarter.

That was Cloudland’s best chance to get on the scoreboard.

CLOUDLAND LEADERS

Birchfield finished the game with 93 yards on 21 carries. Blair added 40 yards, while Shell tallied 24 yards and went 7-of-15 passing.

Gage McKinney had five catches for 40 yards.

Boswell finished with 99 yards and three touchdowns on 16 carries to lead Oliver Springs.
