Blue Devils unable to slow down Gatlinburg-Pittman

ERWIN—The lid was placed on Unicoi County’s football season after Gatlinburg-Pittman scored 48 straight points en route to a 62-21 opening-round win in the TSSAA’s Class 3A playoffs on Friday night.

With the outcome, G-P’s Highlanders advance to the second round to play at Alcoa, which routed West Greene 56-6 in the first round. Gatlinburg-Pittman improved to 9-2 before next week’s game.

Unicoi’s season comes to a close at 6-5 with a fifth straight season of five or more wins for the first time since the 1983 through 1989 teams accomplished that feat.

The teams traded scores on their first possessions. The Highlanders ate up 5:30 before J.D. Shults threw a 10-yard touchdown to Ethan Stinnett. From there, Unicoi County’s Kody Lewis punch in a 3-yard TD run what turned out to be his last game at Gentry Stadium.

Lewis went over the century mark once again and finished his career with over 4,200 career yards and more than 5,000 all-purpose yards.

After that, the Highlanders posted the next 48 points — thanks in part to Bryce Akey. He scored of touchdown runs of 69, 20, 7 and 55. He also blocked a punt that resulting in Liam Brackens picking up the ball and going 26 yards for a TD. Akey blocked a second punt in the contest.

Conor Reagan added a 12-yard touchdown scamper. The game’s final score was a Jacob Ferguson 2-yard run with under two minutes left.

Diego Diaz ran for a pair of Unicoi County scores in the final quarter. The first was a 68-yard run, then came a 6-yard carry after an onside kick gave the ball back to the Blue Devils.
