Patriots get past Golden Raiders for first win

BLUFF CITY—For the second consecutive season, a win over Sullivan North has rescued Sullivan East from a winless campaign.

Mason Hayworth scored on a 79-yard run and broke a 14-14 tie by catching a 6-yard scoring pass from Dylan White 19 seconds before intermission, lifting the Patriots to a 21-14 victory on Friday night.

All scoring came in the first half. Austin Hartsock posted a 13-yard TD run and Dale Potter added a 1-yard plunge across the goal line for the Golden Raiders (5-4), who led 14-7 before the Pats’ Hunter Brown raced 24 yards to paydirt.

Hayworth totaled 124 rushing yards on nine attempts as East improved to 1-8. North’s Yancey Dolen (17-142) and Potter (22-100) combined for 242 yards on the ground.

Volunteer 40, Unicoi County 28

ERWIN — Garrison Barrett threw three touchdowns to Peyton Derrick to lead Volunteer to a non-conference road win at Unicoi County.

Cameron Johnson had 228 rushing yards and two touchdowns and Derrick added a 13-yard touchdown run. Derrick also had eight catches for 164 receiving yards. Barrett was 10-of-14 passing for 206 yards as the Falcons piled 430 yards of total offense. Johnson also had eight tackles, two for loss, an interception, forced a fumble and had two fumble recoveries on the defensive side of the ball.

Kody Lewis scored all four touchdowns for the Blue Devils, bringing his season total up to 23. The Blue Devils were plagued by five turnovers.

Happy Valley 13, Trinity Home School 6

ELIZABETHTON — The Warriors scored both touchdowns in the first quarter and held on for the win against the Knights.

Happy Valley’s defense held Trinity to 79 rushing yards and forced four turnovers. Cameron Slone and Matthew Bahn had fumble recoveries, while Andrew Little had two interceptions.

Eli Ayers threw a 10-yard touchdown to Cameron Slone and a 12-yard touchdown to Will Tittle as the Warriors raced out to a 13-0 lead.

John Kollie scored on a 22-yard touchdown reception for the Knights’ lone score. Trinity was flagged 159 yards for penalties.

Cloudland 46, Johnson County 0

MOUNTAIN CITY — Triston Lacy had 10 carries for 104 yards and a pair of touchdowns and Seth Birchfield added 17 carries for 86 yards and a TD to lead the Highlanders in the shutout of the Longhorns.

Hunter Shell completed 3 of 6 passes for 61 yards, including touchdown passes of 32 and 18 yards to Bentley Gilbert. Hunter Blair had a 15-yard touchdown run.

Tennessee High 49, Cherokee 7

BRISTOL — Connor Trent scored on a 4-yard run to give the Chiefs the early lead before the Vikings reeled off 49 unanswered points.

Cole McBrayer threw for two touchdowns and ran for two more in the Tennessee High victory. Isaiah Smith caught both touchdowns an 18-yard and a six-yard pass. Bryce Snyder, Connor Bailey and Steven Johnson also had touchdown runs for the Vikings.

Tennessee High had 447 yards of total offense, including a 239-31 rushing advantage.

Union County 18, Sullivan Central 12

MAYNARDVILLE — The Cougars led 12-6 at the half, but was unable to hold off the Patriots at the end. Bryson Crabtree had an early touchdown for Central.
