The sophomore quarterback tallied five touchdowns as the Bulldogs took a 42-6 victory over Cloudland on Friday night at Orr Field.
Hampton improved to 5-2 on the year, while Cloudland slipped to 2-5.
The Hampton signal caller finished with five touchdowns — three passing and two on the ground.
Jones went 8-for-13 passing for 109 yards. On the ground, he added 68 yards on 17 carries. He also added an interception for the Bulldog cause.
DEFENSIVE FIRST HALF
Points were hard to come by in the opening two quarters.
The Bulldogs scored on the game’s opening drive as Jones hit Isiah Greenwell for a 45-yard touchdown. The teams traded possessions through the rest of the quarter as HHS held a 6-0 lead. Cloudland was able to move the ball with hard running from Hunter Shell and Hunter Blair but stalled out in Hampton territory midway through the second stanza.
The Bulldogs went on a lengthy drive that ended when Jones scored on an 11-yard run. Jones hit Caleb Oaks for the two-point conversion as Hampton held a 14-0 lead at the break.
HAMPTON PULLS AWAY IN FOURTH
After a back-and-forth battle in the third, the Bulldogs began to pull away in the final stanza.
Gage Chambers caught a pass from Jones to open the scoring in the second half and increase the Hampton lead. The ‘Landers, however, answered later in the quarter as Shell hit Gage McKinney for 55-yard touchdown to trim the Bulldog lead to 16 heading to the final quarter.
In the final quarter, Jonah Jones caught a touchdown pass from his brother, while C. Jones capped his night with a 5-yard scoring run. Haden Birchfield hit J. Jones for the final points of the night.
J. Jones had three catches for 75 yards for Hampton, while Oaks made three receptions for 23 yards.
Blair led Cloudland as he had 41 yards on 10 carries. Shell finished the game with 5-of-12 passing for 73 yards.
Both teams step back in to region play next Friday in a big way. Cloudland will host Jellico in a de facto Region 1-A title game, while Hampton welcomes South Greene for a crucial Region 1-2A tilt.
