Indians' Whitson earns top weekly honor

Zane Whitson is moving up the ranks among the area’s best players.

Dobyns-Bennett’s junior quarterback turned in a five-touchdown effort in Friday’s 42-0 blitzing of Hardin Valley. For his efforts, Whitson was honored Monday as the Johnson City Press/Times-News player of the week.

Here is this week’s honor roll:


Zane Whitson

Dobyns-Bennett, QB

The junior hit on 11 of 16 attempts and racked up 233 yards passing to pace the Indians to the runaway win. Whitson connected for five touchdowns, including two from 69 yards out.


Julian Reed

Sullivan South, RB

The senior rushed for 264 yards and four touchdowns in just three quarters of a 47-23 win over Sullivan Central. His longest scoring runs were 62 and 36 yards.


Connor Batchelder

Science Hill, QB

The Hilltoppers rolled to a 42-8 win over Jefferson County behind the strong passing of the senior. He was 24 of 33 for 298 yards and three scores.


Cade Larkins

David Crockett, QB

The Pioneers’ standout senior hit on 17 of 31 passes for 276 yards with three touchdowns in basically half a game as Crockett beat Cocke County 35-0.


Tater Haun

Cherokee, LB

The Chiefs got it done on both sides of the ball in a 49-6 win over Volunteer. The junior was a defensive beast with 22 tackles, 3 for loss, and 1/2 sack.
