The Bulldogs showed no hangover from last week’s last-second loss as Hampton rolled to a 42-0 victory over rival Cloudland at J.C. Campbell Stadium on Friday night as sophomore Conor Jones recorded five total touchdowns on the night.
With the win, Hampton improved to 2-2 overall. Cloudland slipped to 0-3.
JONES’ BIG NIGHT
The sophomore signal caller threw four touchdowns on the night while adding one on the ground. For the game, he was 7-of-10 passing for 145 yards, while adding 97 yards on 10 carries.
Matt Hughes had 36 yards, while Macon Barden totaled 31 yards on the ground.
HAMPTON SETS TONE EARLY
The Bulldogs didn't waste any time in the first half.
After forcing Cloudland to punt, Hampton went on a 10-play drive that was capped by a 33-yard pass from Jones to Isaiah Greenwell to take an 8-0 lead. After Jonah Jones ended the next CHS drive with an interception, Jones ran in from six yards out to give HHS a 14-0 advantage going to the second quarter.
Cloudland saw Hunter Shell and Conner Birchfield have strong runs, but the Highlanders were unable to get things clicking offensively. Caleb Oaks had a touchdown catch and a rushing touchdown in the second quarter, while Jones hit Hughes for a 25-yard touchdown to give HHS a 35-0 lead at the break.
In the second half, Jones found Gage Chambers for his fourth passing touchdown of the night to cap scoring. The ’Landers continued to battle and found some offense with Hunter Blair, but was unable to break onto the scoreboard.
Birchfield finished the game with 31 yards on seven carries. Blair added 19 yards. The ‘Landers saw a number of younger players contribute, including Seth Birchfield and Chase Shell.
Hampton hits the road with a trip to Jellico, while Cloudland will open Region 1-A play at Hancock County.
