Cherokee's Courtney lands top spot in football honor roll

When a team meets its biggest rival, the standout performances tend to shine even brighter.

Cherokee’s Trey Courtney was a wrecking crew for Volunteer’s planned victory party as the Chiefs earned a 48-27 win. For his efforts, Courtney was chosen as the Johnson City Press/Times News 5-star player of the week.

Cherokee, QB

Erasing the Chiefs from the winless list, the senior led his team to a victory over its biggest rival. He passed for 107 yards and three scores while also rushing for 207 yards and a touchdown in a 48-27 decision against Volunteer.

NATHAN LANE

Johnson County, RB

The senior piled up 290 all-purpose yards and scored four touchdowns as the Longhorns pounded West Greene, 35-7. He had 178 rushing and an 86-yard interception return for a score.

CADE LARKINS

David Crockett, QB

Topping 350 yards for the third straight game, the senior finished with 375 in the air to complement four touchdowns. He also ran for a score in a 41-20 win over Cocke County.

DEVON JARRETT

Unaka, WR

In a hard-fought 44-34 loss to Jellico, the senior totaled eight catches for 221 yards and had touchdown receptions of 62 and 38 yards.

DONTA HACKLER

David Crockett, DB

With big plays on both sides of the ball, the junior totaled seven catches for 150 yards and a score as a receiver while also adding two important second-half interceptions to thwart Cocke County drives.
