ROAN MOUNTAIN — The Carter County Sheriff’s Department has identified the 10-year-old boy who died Tuesday in the drowning accident in a pond on Blue Grass Road.

The child was Daius Young. He was retrieved from the pond and resuscitated through CPR, but died later at Johnson City Medical Center.

Deputy McKinley Berry was the first officer to reach the scene after the 1:50 p.m. dispatch. Lt. Mark McClain said Berry jumped into the frozen-over pond and broke through the ice to get to the boy. McClain said the child was unresponsive and his face and head were under the ice.

Berry grabbed the child and brought him to the bank of the pond. At that point, the Carter County Rescue Squad arrived on the scene and began administering CPR.

McClain spoke with the boy’s mother, who said he had been playing outside with a brother and had fallen in the pond and could not get out.
